Mantle Forgeries

Volume 3, Number 2 CoverDallas- Danny and Billy Mantle used to attend shows in Dallas and sell balls and photos signed by their Dad. Later, Danny and David befriended Dallas area show promoter and memorabilia dealer Jim Kuykendall. Together, they opened a shop under the banner D. Mantle's Memorabilia. Their business venue shifted to shows five or so months later when rent at the mall location rose faster than sales volume. The last such outing was at the 1995 National in St. Louis, where Kuykendall sold one of his last photographs signed by Mickey and Billy Martin for $350. The photo showed both young players in street clothes in front of New York's Edison Hotel. Martin had signed several of these a few weeks before his own death. In St. Louis and at shows subsequent to Mantle's death, D. Mantle's Memorabilia saw an inordinate amount of Mantle forgeries. "It's very bad and it's going to get worse," Kuykendall said. The dealer/promoter says consumers need to remember that if the price is too good to be true, it probably is. "Why would someone sell a Mantle photo for $60 or $70 when he could easily sell an item for at least twice that amount?" he wondered.
