The Juice Signing in Jail

Volume 2, Number 4 Cover It's been an interesting run for O.J. Simpson, just like the days when he toted the pigskin for the Trojans, Bills and 49ers. While the system of jurisprudence determines whether he wielded a knife on a fateful night in June 1994, O.J. Simpson is wielding a variety of pens in jail, affixing his signature to numerous items for fans who are adoring and sympathetic but, more likely, curious and suspect in their motives. The effort is being done to meet autograph demand and help Simpson pay the bills, which in no small measure include his defense. Sources say Simpson's legal bill is $60,000 a week, which would amount to a monster financial hit to any celebrity and a nice annual wage for anyone else. Simpson representatives are selling items through his Locker 32 enterprise, a business that cropped up a few years ago to promote signed items for O.J. Simpson and Marcus Allen. The business associate and friend who attempts end runs around the media mob at the Los Angeles County Courthouse is Mike Gilbert of Locker 32. Gilbert is the lone witness to Simpson signed items in jail. Not all visits, though, are autographing sessions.
