Frozen Pond reports theft

TORONTO, Aug. 15 -- In the midst of the Northeast blackout, a truck pulled up in front of Frozen Pond, one of the largest sports memorabilia stores in Canada, and smashed the front door and made off with stash of memorabilia. Hersh Borenstein of Frozen Pond says the value of the stolen items is $37,000 ($51,000 Canadian). Among the items stolen were:
• Roberto Alomar's 1992 World Series Trophy
• A Paul Molitor Vintage Blue Jays Autographed Jersey
• A Cal Ripken Jr. Autographed Steiner Bat
• A Derek Jeter Autographed Steiner Bat
• A Mike Schmidt Autographed Bat
• An Eddie George Autographed Football
• A Joe Namath Autographed Vintage Jets Helmet
• Two Rick Nash Framed Autographed 8X10 Photos with Frozen Pond holograms; and
• A 1984 Blue Jays Team-Signed Baseball

Also stolen were a large quantity of NHL pro and replica jerseys, mostly the classic (throwback) style. A number of Charlestown Chiefs and Team Canada pro jerseys were also taken.

Hockey Fights Cancer II: $418,877

A "Pond of Dreams" photo, signed by Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe and Mario Lemieux, sold for a very charitable $16,502 during the NHL's second annual Hockey Fights Cancer auction. The internet sale coincided with the league's All Star festivities. In all, the 136 items fetched $418,877. The top items in the sale were All-Star jerseys from the 2000 mid-season classic and various captains' game-worn jerseys from the current season. A signed, game-worn Mark Messier jersey sold for $9,007; Messier's Team North America jersey from last year sold for $8,003. Tony Anonte's signed captain's Blackhawks jersey sold for $7,502; Steve Yzerman's signed Red Wings captain's jersey sold for $7,520; Scott Stevens' New Jersey Devils captain's jersey sold for $4,802; Ray Bourque's game-worn Bruins captain's jersey sold for $10,804; Jaromir Jagr's Penguins captain's jersey sold for $8,002. A Devils "fantasy lot" included two passes to practice, two tickets to a game and Total Hockey encyclopedia, signed by last year's Stanley Cup Champs, sold for nearly $2,000.

Hockey Fights Cancer I: Gretzky jersey $80,500

Wayne Gretzky's NHL All-Star game jersey from last year's game, in which he scored three points and was named MVP for the third time, was sold for $80,500 during an online auction Feb. 7. In other results from the Hockey Fights Cancer Auction, an original Charles Schulz Peanuts comic strip, with hockey content, sold for $4,101; Two tickets to this year's Stanley Cup Finals sold for $6,000; and two tickets to next year's NHL All-Star game sold for $6,100. Jaromir Jagr's World All-Star jersey from the 1999 game in Tampa sold for $8,000. The jersey was autographed by Jagr on the back. Mark Messier's Canada World Cup unsigned jersey from '96 sold for $6,500; and Mike Modano's '99 All-Star jersey, signed on the back, sold for $7,400. The minimum bid was $500.

A 1996 Ray Bourque All-Star Game jersey sold for $4,200 during a recent auction conducted by Rotman Auctions. Bourque scored the winning goal in overtime and was named the game's MVP while wearing this jersey. The jersey was signed by Borque on the inside of the jersey.

Canadian Sports Autograph Services (CSAS) is launching a series of autographed 4-by-6-inch color photographs of hockey greats to give hockey collectors what baseball and football collectors are receiving through similar collectibles. The players in Series One are Reg "Red" Horner, Jean Beliveau, Len "Red" Kelley, Jim Morrison, Eddie Litzenberger and Lou Fontinato. The series will be produced and released similarly to the way Perez-Steele has handled its series for years. In fact, Bob Semetka of CSAS, a Perez-Steele subscriber since 1981 adapted the concept from the much-loved baseball series.No more than 2,000 series will be produced. Series One costs $75.
